I hope that in 5 years I will be at the point of “traslating” what I found in mice to human patients. That means that I hope that other scientists working with humans can scan for the genes that I have identified in mice as cause of a disease. I really don’t mind where I am going to work: from Los Angeles to New Zealand everything will be fine, I like adventures!

I’ve just applied for a 4-year job working on understanding how malaria vaccines might work, so in 5 years time I would love to be finishing that and telling other scientists about those results. The idea would then be to help the scientists who design the vaccines make them better so that they protect more people… then hopefully going on to continue research on the immune system and travelling lots! I’m like Sara- the best science comes with international adventures 🙂

At the moment our research group is conducting a lot of work in the area of muscle function and its role in injury prevention. In 5 years time I would like to understand whether muscle function is related to ligament injury e.g. if a faster contracting muscle can reduce the risk of ligament injury. I would also like to understand how long it takes muscle to repair after an injury and what rehabilitation strategies can be used to speed up this process.

We’re currently working on two new medicines for aspects of diabetes and dementia, so in five years time I’d like at least one of those to be on the way to being used in a trial in people. We’re also mapping changes in the human brain as it gets affected by Alzheimer’s disease so in 5 years I’d hope that all of that information is available for others to use to help with their research, as well as our own. As for where I’d like to be, I’d like to be still in Manchester, although with a few extra people in my lab and more money, so we can get more research done quicker!

In 5 years I would like to be implementing the techniques I’m developing in my PhD to study muscle function in patients who suffer from different cardiovascular diseases (a bit like what I do not but more specific). I’d like to gain enough funding to support my research and help support the team I work with.
