Hi Ruth, thanks for this question.

It was an accident in the sense that I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to study at University. I liked Biology a lot at School so I applied for a BSc course (Bachelor of Science) but then I went off to China and learnt to speak Chinese, I though I might like to continue studying the language when I came back. I re-applied to a University that offered both Chinese and Biology as options thinking that I might be able to do a bit of both, when I got there my tutor told I would have to choose one or the other because there were too many clashes in the timetable (Science subjects have a lot of practical sessions so you often find you get more taught time than doing an arts degree). I didn’t think about it at all, I just took science. I’m not sure why in that moment I just wanted to be a scientist but I’ve not ever looked back.

Sorry, its a long story! 😉
